Construct an interchange at the intersection of US20 & 332nd Ave.  Extend the frontage road in front of FarmTek to 332 Ave and close the limited access from 7th St. SW and the hospital road.  Visibility at that intersection is still an issue and we need to prevent any further deadly accidents at that site.

Playground equipment in the parks---the baby swings are all broken and the slides were old when I was a kid

Soccer complex......crossing the road with your kids to get to their games is dangerous-even with the stop signs, people just barrel through

Baseball complex....since baseball is such a HUGE part of Dyersville, it just makes sense to have an incredible facility....take a trip over to Peosta's little league baseball complex...it is incredible!  But just think how much better Dyersville's would be

Kindergarten---there isn't a public school in Dyersville...with all the Catholic schools closing, wouldn't it make sense to add a public school?  And there are those who just can't AFFORD private schools, Catholic or not.

Downtown Friday nights----how about music in the parks.....could be local or talent brought in....but there are many summer nights that a 'mellow' concert would go over....people bring their lawn chairs, no alcohol served or brought in, offer a snack bar.....thinking a couple hours on a Sunday night would go over...nothing too late so elderly and those with young kids could all enjoy and still make it home at a decent hour

Last summer, attended a CR Kernels game...they had fireworks after the game-it was incredible!  ALSO, after the game they had 'movie night in the outfield'.....even a movie night in the park could be a draw...and make it available as fundraisers....Boy Scouts selling popcorn or fundraising for cancer or sick kids

A doggie park----let's just say that I see people letting their dog poo and not clean up after them

The Heritage Trail should remain for those biking and walking---there are already kids riding mopeds on it, and it is VERY dangerous for all....ATV's riding at top speed, zipping all over would be  nightmare.....they need a field all their own

An indoor lap pool attached to the rec center.  This is a pool that does not require life guards but is for adults that like to do laps or water aerobics.  It's a small pool similar to what sports clubs have.  It only some 40 foot wide by 150 foot long and depth is from 3.5 feet to around 8 foot.  It doesn't replace the existing outdoor aquatic center, but allows an alternative which allows individuals to work out.  Changing rooms and showers allow people to arrive early and change for work.  Additional revenues could be obtained through swimming lessons or private parties.

Hard surface airport

Sporting goods rental place and hotel by Heritage Trail to market as a destination

Vacant buildings downtown converted to loft apartments

Garage for downtown apartments

The City of Cedar Rapids has many splash pad parks. These are free zero entry water sprinkiling systems. I feel if Dyersville puts in one it will draw people from other communities bringing in more retail sales.  Here are examples and detailed explanation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splash_pad
http://brett619.jalbum.net/Splash%20Zone%20splash%20pads/

It would be nice to have a fenced dog park for residents to bring their dogs to run and play. I travel to Dubuque once a week so my dog can run, I would be willing to pay a small fee per year for this luxury.

I live on First Ave across from the church, there is not enough parking and often times I have to drive around cars parked 3 cars wide in the middle of the street. It also irritates me that the kids at the school have to play in the street.  There is a huge field behind the houses on 1st Ave  & 3rd St. that could be used for a splash pad park, dog park, parking lot and playground.  Why close off streets? Why not use the space available?

Public School

Hwy 136 revision to eliminate congestion & promote safety with Beckman H.S., it's students as well as all drivers

More restaurants along with recreation & entertainment to bring visitors / circulating $$$$

Another Hwy 20 overpass for accessability & safety

Vision centralizing industry in the future.  First impressions are lasting and if visitors see industry scattered everywhere, it looks like a shabby town.

Public K-12 school

More worship opportunities--Protestant churches

More welcoming attitude to new residents in town

Create new public school district.

Break away from WD School System. Resulting in less taxes. This Dyersville area runs our school system, since there is no fair representation under current WD voting system.

Create Frisbee Golf Course

Golf Cart legalization on streets. Provides better fuel economy if it's a gas cart, and electric carts provides less emissions.  Make them so they are street legal like areas of Arizona currently do.

Form new public school district and include Maquoketa Valley since they are looking at reorganization.

The League of American Bicyclists offers a program to designate cities as “Bicycle Friendly Communities.” There are quite a few cities with that designation, but none in Iowa at the moment.

I think it would be a cool thing for Dyersville to work toward this. Not only would it be a nice feather in our cap, but would help educate our residents about the importance of bicycling. Drivers would be reminded of giving bicyclists respect, and bicyclists would be reminded to obey traffic laws. And, as a terminus of the Heritage Trail, it could provide some incentive for people to ride out here from Dubuque.  There are a LOT of bicyclists in Dyersville. I think we could get this!  Here’s information on the program: http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bicyclefriendlyamerica/communities/

Keep a strong catholic grade school and high school.  Keep the public school with only Kindergarten and 1st grade.  We have a well kept secret in our community and we need to encourage people in larger cities to move to Dyersville to raise their children.  Families in Cedar Rapids and Waterloo make sacrifices of $5,000 - $15,000/year to send their children to a private religious grade school.  Couples in their thirties are moving to communities with private religious schools for their children to attend.  These couples attended public schools and decided their children need a school that encourages children to be responsible, positive minded individuals who can conquer any barriers or obstacles they confront.

The biggest thing that Dyersville needs to grow is jobs.  To convince big companies to come to Dyersville will be a challenge, but it will be impossible to get a large company to even consider Dyersville without an airport with a hard surface runway.  In this modern day, transportation and communication are what make and break a company and for many companies a hard surface airport is one thing they need to move into a town.  Dyersville needs new jobs but in order to do this you need to entice the companies to come here.  Large companies will not consider Dyersville without a hard surface runway.

I’d like to suggest we plan on having an airport that will encourage industry to come to Dyersville. Having a paved 5000 ft runway and aircraft hangers would significantly increase Dyersville’s appeal to companies looking for a location to place their business.

To the suggestion of public schools because Catholic schools are expensive- To the contrary. Catholic schools are what has made Dyersville special. Get us out of the WD system.

Form new public school system. Include Cascade, and MV.

How about breaking away from WD school district?  Maybe joining w/ New Vienna, Casacde, Earlville, Worthington.  Would allow better representation for our community and less taxes.  The Catholic school here have $ to offset expenses for low income families.

Frisbee golf

Lake somewhere?  Maybe to offset some flooding?  Maybe the Candy Cane/West Side area?  This would create recreational opportunities; fishing, boating, playground , beach, and help keep our teens busy instead of drinking!

Encourage community members to invest in STO's for low-income families to attract their children to non-public schools.

A 24-hour open Rec Center.  Manchester has one.  Members use their driver's license to enter and exit.

Keep taxes low

Keep a new school out.

Keep Dyersville an affordable town to live in.  We have many home dwellers with one elderly person living there living on a fixed income.  We must protect them from incurring higher property and city taxes.  Many of these residents helped develop Dyersville years ago and it is our responsiblity to ensure them an affordable lifestyle until their death.

Summer programs that teach school age children in a fun way about science experiments, exploring nature, singing, insects, building with clay, dirt & stones.  5 years ago I particpated in a few summer programs. The program should be 8 weeks long.  Farley has an excellent week long day camp in August.

Aid (SBA loans) young entrepreneurs to buy an existing business to start an indoor skate park, teen dance center, movie theater, etc.  An example: Cardinal restaurant with a skate park in the basement.

I believe we could have Frisbee golf here in Dyersville at a very low cost. It is very good exercise for old and young alike.  The cost is very low, and also very low maintenance.  Could be placed in a wooded area as well as open area.

We need a frisbee golf course. The cost is very low.

Frisbee golf is good for young and old and cost is very low to build and play.

Please consider an airport for Dyersville. It should be a permanent, paved 5000 ft runway with some hangars. An addition to the city like this would surely help bring and sustain industry for a long time into the future.

I have heard mention of a lake with some cabins and some pavilions with a park. I am thinking this is a great idea. It would target people of all ages.  A sand bar, canoeing, paddle boating, fishing, picnicking, swimming, feeding ducks during the summer, and ice fishing and ice skating, sledding during the winter. It could be a good water source for flooding and bring people to town. This would provide entertainment for people of all ages at all times of the year. The cabins would be a huge hit and bring families to Dyersville. People are looking for getaways in small towns and children need something to do. Could have fishing tournaments for kids and adults, the opportunities are endless. Go big and make it something people want to visit this town for. Along the new walk trail on the beltline would be a nice place to look and a great location right in the center of town which floods frequently. It would be beautiful.

Dialysis unit at Mercy Hospital in the old OB area.  This would utilize space which already exists, and cost would be lower than building a new site. Dialysis patients need to be dialyzed 3 times per week, THIS IS A LIFE SAVING treatment -- each treatment takes 4-4 1/2 hours.  One dialysis chair can treat 4 patients per week.  Dyersville needs a 3 chair site which would treat 12 patients per week.  6 on a Mon - Wed - Friday schedule, and 6 on a Tuesday-Thursday - Saturday schedule.  These patients now have to travel to either Dubuque, Manchester, or Guttenberg 3 times per week for this life saving treatment.  There are currently 12-15 patients from Dyersville, Petersburg, New Vienna, Farley that currently make these trips every week, many of whom need drivers to take them each way.  How nice it would be to only have to travel 5-6 miles for this instead of 20-30 miles, especially on holidays, and snowy winter days -- Yes holidays - dialysis patients do not get holidays off.  This is a life saving treatment - without it they would die in 7-21 days. The current list of patients can easily keep a 3 chair unit full at Dyersville upon the first day of opening.  I would also think that the current nursing staff at Mercy could be trained to run these machines, therefore also keeping employment local, and supporting our local hospital.  What better way to utilize a medical facility than for a medical need that already exists in the community. On any given day this unit could quite possibly have more pateints than the current 3 man doctor office that already exists!! This unit would "pay for itself" upon the first day of opening its doors -- how many opportunities like that exist in today's world?

Improve airport with a cement runway, hangar and landing lights to promote business for the area

Small engine repair shop

Computer store

Dyersville needs a hard surface airport to attract new business, which in return will create jobs to pay for all the other projects that are requested. Currently a business will not look at relocating to Dyersville as we have no hard surface airport.

We need a senior center

Transportation in town is difficult for those unable to drive.  A taxi service to take people to doctor appointments in town and out of town is needed.

Movie theater

We need more nursing home beds

Dyersville needs an enhanced airport with concrete runway. My family has experienced flight first-hand because the airport was so close and accessible. And a paved runway airport is a must-have for businesses looking to relocate or expand their operations away from high-cost and large metro areas... which means new jobs! Dyersville has a healthy tourism industry which would only be enhanced by a public use - paved runway. I know many of my friends that fly have expressed interest in a flight to Dyersville but are scared off by the grass runway that is only open 8 months a year.

Dam the North Fork Maquoketa somewhere south of New Wine Park to create a reservoir that can be used for fishing, boating, camping, hiking and flood control for Dyersville.

Make flowers available through the city and Garden Club and allow/encourage residents to plant them in the grass area between the sidewalk and the street.

Buy Darlene Ertl property south of Candy Cane. Create an arboretum area with this property, Candy Cane, and the Westside Park area. Could be many trails, trees, wildflowers, picnic areas etc.

Community theater and community band - Then refurbish upper floor of city hall to the way it was in the 50s. Can be used for theater, concerts, library programs, city rec programs, traveling art exhibits, lectures and many other things but not gymnastics.

Improve airport to encourge business location in Dyersville.  Air travel is not just a hobby it is a necessity for modern business

Improve street going North and South past the cemetary at the city's expence. It is not just for the dead and greving, it is the future home for us all.

We fly to Dyersville every year, but our larger aircraft requires us to land in Dubuque or Monticello.  If Dyersville had a paved runway we would be able to land there.  We stay in Dyersville; it would be much more convenient for us to land there also.

New tourism attraction: Build a 300' steel structured baseball bat. 300' because that is the minimum batting average that a player hopes to attain during the season. The structure would be built with the fat end of the bat on the ground, standing straight up. The knob of the bat would be an observation deck enclosed by windows. There would be an elevator to the top. Visitors could be charged $3 or something to go to the top. Possibly roof space could be sold for cell phones or radio use? The bottom of the bat, depending on space, could be an Iowa baseball museum. Again depending on space, possibly the chamber offices could be located there. The bat should be built where the tennis courts used to be at the Commercial Club Park. This is one of if not the highest point in Dyersville. The water tower near by should then be painted like a baseball. Hillerich & Bradsby, makers of Louisville Slugger bats should be contacted and asked to use their logo on the bat in exchange for $1 million to help build it and their unlimited use for marketing purposes.
